How we open a local edition

We do not launch an edition with a handful of interchangeable articles. Before calling a market active, we prepare a substantial body of practical guides, locally researched pricing or data work, reporting grounded in public institutions, and documented project or expert-source stories. The first group of articles must represent several independent sources and cannot be built around one favored business.

Tampa Bay, Northeast Ohio, Central Mississippi & Northeast Louisiana, and Orlando Metro are active after passing the same independent launch gate. The southern regional edition contains separate Jackson, Vicksburg, and Monroe desks because their jurisdictions and source systems cannot be treated as interchangeable. We add communities because there is enough meaningful reporting to do—not to create a page for every ZIP code or business relationship.
