Avon Lake’s inspection chart is organized by permit type, not one universal construction sequence. Match your issued permit to its row, then ask Building which listed and additional inspections apply.
The City’s inspection page explicitly says the chart is not all-inclusive. It instructs applicants to call 440-930-4102 at least 24 hours before the desired inspection day. A request is not a confirmed appointment or a passed inspection.
Read across the row, not down every column
These examples come from the City’s one-page matrix. LSL selected contrasting rows to show why one project’s checklist cannot be reused for another.
| Permit type | Stages marked in the published chart | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete: driveways, patios and service walks | Concrete/paving pre-pour and final | Ask about the pre-pour visit before committing to the pour |
| Decks/porches | Footer pre-pour, post hole, framing rough-in and framing final | Footing/post work and the completed frame are separate inspection points |
| Electric panel/service | Electrical final | Do not substitute the electrical-wiring row, which also marks underground and rough-in |
| Fence | Post hole and an “Other” final | Ask when holes must be available for inspection and what the final covers |
| Air conditioners | HVAC final | Confirm the exact equipment permit and any connected work |
A blank cell is not permission to omit a requirement. For mixed work—such as a deck with electrical equipment—ask Building to reconcile the actual scopes instead of choosing whichever row has fewer marks.
Prepare the scheduling call
Have the permit number, job address, exact stage and responsible site contact available. Ask what must be accessible and ready, whether the requested day is available, and whether another trade or Engineering inspection must be coordinated separately. Those are LSL’s preparation questions, not a claim that the City publishes an online booking process.
Distinguish the call time, confirmed appointment and result. If the contractor says “inspection handled,” ask which of those events occurred. Arrange the work schedule around the City’s actual direction, especially before pouring or concealing the stage it needs to see.
A correction needs a result, not just a photograph
Retain the inspection result identifying the permit and stage. If it requires correction or another inspection, ask what evidence and return visit the City needs. Contractor photographs can explain a repair but do not by themselves establish City acceptance.
For a final, ask whether all required trades and other permit conditions are complete. The word “final” in one matrix column is not proof that every associated approval has closed.
If the project has not reached an issued permit, start with Avon Lake’s zoning, grading and building handoffs.
LSL visually read the complete matrix and checked the City’s scheduling page on September 20, 2026. This selective comparison does not reproduce every permit type or determine which inspections a private project needs. No appointment, field inspection or result was obtained.
