Berea’s online building-permit system is not the submission channel for Planning Commission materials. Use CommunityConnect for the permit tasks the City lists; send Commission packets through the separate physical-submission route.

That distinction is more useful than tracking every portal click as though it were an approval.

Decide which channel your task belongs in

The Building Department requires physical Commission materials by its stated deadline and rejects their submission through the online permit system. A driveway widening that needs that review should start with the Commission and inspection guide.

For building permits, the City’s online instructions describe applications, electronic plans, payments, inspection requests and project-status access. Start from that official City link so the account route is tied to Berea, Ohio.

The public page distinguishes a contractor added by the jurisdiction from a community member who self-registers. If the right project or role is missing, ask Building at 440-826-5812 or buildingdept@cityofberea.org to resolve access. LSL did not create an account or inspect private project screens.

Match both category and permit type

The City’s linked category list contains two fields, not one. These examples show why a broad trade name can be insufficient:

Proposed residential taskCategory in the published listPermit type in that list
Interior alterationBuilding Permit Residential AlterationResidential - Building Alteration / Renovation
Electrical panel or sub-panelElectrical Permit Residential One StopResidential - Electrical Panel / Sub - Panel
Driveway, apron or sidewalkMisc. Building Permit Residential One StopRes - Driveway / Apron / Sidewalk

This is LSL’s selection from the City’s mapping, not a private permit determination or a live test of dropdown labels. Give Building the actual scope if more than one trade or approval could apply. Do not choose a superficially similar category simply to get a submission accepted.

The City page recommends Google Chrome. We have not independently tested every browser or the authenticated workflow.

Keep inspection requests separate from confirmations

The City’s linked inspection-request guide, updated August 16, 2019, describes selecting a permit and inspection, requesting a date/time and adding access or call-ahead notes. It then distinguishes jurisdiction review from an email confirming scheduling or explaining denial.

Use this LSL appointment check before relying on the requested time:

Correct permit and inspection type selected: ___
Requested date/time: ___
Site contact and access instructions supplied: ___
City’s confirmation or denial received: ___
Confirmed appointment and unresolved conditions: ___

The older guide is still linked, but screenshots and controls can change. Ask Building if today’s screen differs. Neither clicking a request nor receiving an automated submission message establishes that the inspection passed.

Retrieve the result, not just the activity history

The City’s results guide points readers to inspection history, notes and documents. Look for the actual result and correction instructions for the inspection performed. If the expected report is missing, ask the department; do not turn an empty document area into a pass or a failure.

Likewise, preserve the issued permit separately from its invoice or receipt. A payment can document money received without establishing every review or final inspection.

LSL read the City’s public online and department instructions, category mapping, and linked inspection request/results text on September 20, 2026. The category comparison and confirmation check replace the previous generic ledger. The registration destination exposed only a loading shell during our check; no account, payment, submission, private document or current authenticated interface was tested.
