A page headed “Mississippi River at Vicksburg” is not automatically a current river reading. During our September 8, 2026 check, the Corps’ Rivergages page returned older observation timestamps, while a similarly named USGS entry offered location metadata without an observation series. Check the observation time, not just the page title
The retrieved Corps displays were not September 8 observations. A search result and an opened version also showed different older dates. We therefore do not report either value as today’s river level.
Before using a river page, record:
- The reporting agency and station identifier.
- The observation’s date, time and time zone.
- Whether the value is observed, forecast or historical.
- Whether the display is showing stage or elevation.
- The stated units and vertical reference, when applicable.
If the observation is stale or the labels are missing, obtain a current, fully labeled observation before making a time-sensitive comparison. A recent search-engine crawl date does not update the measurement itself.
A metadata entry may have no measurements
The USGS entry for USCE-07289000 identifies a Corps location in Warren County but showed no available continuous, daily or field measurement data types when checked. Its location and altitude fields are descriptive metadata, not today’s water level.
The Corps page has stage/elevation controls and a stated gage reference. Do not copy a number from one display into another while dropping those labels. Similar station names do not establish that every coordinate, reference or value is interchangeable.
Keep a river reading separate from a property decision
This verification card does not calculate flood depth at a home, certify a route as passable or identify a safe time to enter a building. Those decisions need current official instructions and appropriate location-specific information.
Our work was a read-only check of source identity, timestamps and measurement labels. No current flood forecast, property elevation comparison or river-level trend was calculated.
