Choose the right application route

Residential owners and renters or lessees can use the online route for eligible barrier-island properties. Commercial properties must apply in person at the relevant town or city hall. The Sheriff’s page limits residential permits to two per property address. Who can apply

Before starting, make a small preparation record:

  • Whether the property is residential or commercial.
  • The barrier-island municipality and property address.
  • The applicant’s driver-license image and separate address evidence.
  • Whether the permit will be mailed or collected in person.
  • The confirmation and any instructions for completing the request.

Keep identification in the official application channel, not in a public planning document. A mailing address somewhere in Pinellas does not establish that a property is in this barrier-island program.

Keep request, issuance and collection separate

The Sheriff’s Office says every request is reviewed; applying does not guarantee issuance. For mailed permits, its three-business-day mailing statement follows completed processing and issuance. It is not a three-day application approval promise. Requests requiring in-person completion can be deleted if unfinished after two calendar weeks. Processing conditions

Record the actual issuance notice or pickup instructions instead of treating the first confirmation email as the permit itself.

Recheck access when a storm occurs

The County recovery FAQ says restrictions remain until safe, after which access may still be limited to residents and businesses with permits. Follow current official reopening directions; possession of a tag is not permission to cross a closed checkpoint.
