Vicksburg’s official garbage records agree that residential collection occurs twice weekly and that different material needs different preparation. They do not agree on every operational detail. One City handout says set out by 6 a.m.; another says 7 a.m. A live notice says all waste must be in the City container, while official handouts describe limited second-day material beside the container.
Do not silently average those instructions. Classify the material, record what each City source says, and obtain a current answer for the address and week.
What the three records agree on
The City garbage notice describes twice-weekly route pairs: Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday. It directs ordinary household garbage to City containers and excludes hazardous and construction material from them.
The detailed Garbage Collection Rules and Regulations also use both weekly collection days, with limited yard and bulky material assigned to the second day. They place building-material disposal on the resident or contractor and say a contractor who produces tree debris is responsible for it.
The live collection notice warns that the rules are contractual and can change. That warning is the reason to timestamp a confirmation instead of treating an undated PDF as permanent.
Material-by-material comparison
| Material | Published route | Preparation or limit in the records | Confirmation needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary household garbage | Both regular collection days | Inside City container | Address route and current cart rule |
| Leaves | Second collection day in detailed rules | Bags; detailed rules state up to five except during leaf season | Current seasonal and beside-cart allowance |
| Limbs | Second collection day in detailed rules | No longer than four feet, bundled, no more than 50 pounds per bundle | Quantity, placement, and whether contractor-produced |
| Bulky household goods | Second day / weekly heavy-trash language | Detailed rules state up to two cubic yards and name mattress/box items | Item eligibility and appointment, if any |
| Large appliances | Special Wednesday route in detailed rules | Contact City Action Line | Scheduled/accepted item and preparation |
| Hired tree-work debris | Not assigned to residential collection by detailed rules | Contractor responsible | Removal destination in the contract |
| Building material | Outside ordinary residential collection | Resident or contractor disposes | Lawful destination and receipt |
| Hazardous material | Excluded from container | No handling method established by these sources | Current responsible-program instruction |
Do not use the limits in one row to authorize a different kind of material. Four-foot limb preparation does not turn demolition lumber into yard debris.
Conflict one: 6 a.m. or 7 a.m.
The garbage notice says to have containers out by 6 a.m. The detailed rules say 7 a.m. Both are City-hosted; the reviewed text does not supply a clear revision date that lets this article establish which instruction superseded the other.
Use the earlier time only as a cautious personal choice if lawful and practical—not as a claim that the City resolved the conflict. For a reliable record, ask the City or its contracted collector for the current set-out deadline, record the date/contact, and save a screenshot or written response.
Conflict two: everything in one container or limited material beside it
The live notice says all waste must be placed in the City-provided container and describes one container per collection/residence. The garbage notice mentions an additional brown container, while the detailed rules allow named leaves, limbs and bulky material beside the container on the second day.
Those statements cannot all become one unconditional rule. Before placing anything outside a cart, confirm:
- the address and route days;
- whether a second container is currently available and on what terms;
- which second-day materials may sit beside the cart;
- item, bag, bundle, weight and volume limits;
- distance from the curb and prohibition on blocking street or sidewalk; and
- delays or special instructions for the week.
Keep that confirmation with a set-out photo taken from private property where lawful. A photo proves placement at a time, not that the material was eligible.
Appliances and project debris need their own destinations
The detailed rules direct residents to the City Action Line for large-appliance collection on Wednesdays. Calling is not the same as receiving acceptance. Record the item, confirmation/reference, preparation direction and collection result.
Building material is assigned to the resident or contractor rather than ordinary residential pickup. Put debris removal into the project contract: material included, hauling party, legal destination, charges and receipt. For tree work, the City rules specifically assign contractor-produced tree debris to the contractor.
Avoid placing paint, chemicals, batteries or other potentially hazardous items based on this garbage matrix. Ask the responsible City or waste program to classify and route them; this article does not provide handling instructions.
The same-week confirmation card
Before set-out, write one line for each field: address; route pair; first/second day; material; container/placement; quantity limits; deadline; special pickup reference; source/contact/date. If two sources conflict, keep both and add the City’s current answer.
After collection, record what was taken and what remained. If material is refused, do not redistribute it into smaller piles to evade a limit. Reclassify it with the City and obtain the appropriate destination.
